Name: Alisa Kim

Name of Production Team: Walking Through the 6iX

Role in the Production Team: Storyboard Artist, Art Director, Co-director, Actress

Roles of the other Production Team members:

Jason: Director, camera operator, editor

Alex: Sound and credits director, script writer

Cesar: Production manager, administrator and actor

1. How do you feel about the title you were given and how well you did your job in this project?  Give specific examples of your experience.

I had a lot of fun creating the thumbnail sketches for the storyboard, for I love drawing and being creative. Throughout this course, I’ve learned how to create effective storyboards for films. Thus, I felt that I created a great storyboard for I was experienced, organized and had a balanced layout. While creating the storyboard I ensured to keep in mind that the frame is the viewfinder of my groups story, and the layout is the plan of what you want to be seen and how. With this in mind, I was organized by creating a mind map before starting the storyboard. This definitely helped me to stay on track and work a lot more efficiently to tight deadlines. Moreover, I was able to take direction and was prepared to make changes to my work in response to constructive feedback from group members. In addition, as the interviewer I believe that I asked good questions for I tried to stick to questions that relate directly to each interviewee’s background. Furthermore, I used the techniques of active listening such as rephrasing and follow-up questions to delve deeper into interviewees’ initial answers. As the art director, I stuck to the “Walking Through the 6iX” theme, ensuring that each page of our package is consistent and fits the overall style of our documentary. In conclusion, I worked efficiently and effectively on this project.

2. How did you contribute to this project?  Give at least 2 specific examples.

Before beginning the project, I took the time to ensure that each member of the team- and especially myself-understand the scope of the project and the desired end goal. For example, one of my group members were confused on their specific task, so I assisted this group member by clarifying what their role is and what they needed to complete. By making sure that every group member understands the end goal, I found that I was able to make better individual decisions and reduce confusion. In addition, I contributed to this project by being a full and active participant in meetings and discussions. For instance, when we were brainstorming story ideas, I always shared my ideas/opinions and was encouraging and supportive of other group members. Any group discussions that we had, I always gave my input. Furthermore, I was able to recognize interdependencies between myself and others in the group.  As the storyboard artist I ensured to complete all my thumbnails by a specific date, so that the camera operator would have a effective layout to refer to when filming the documentary. Also, I collaborated with Alex (the sounds and credits director) so that he would know what background audio he should edit into the film. Overall I was able to see that my work products, decisions and efforts affect many others in the group, so staying on track was definitely one of the vital ways I contributed to the group.

3. Participation. Comments about co-operation, diligence, support. To what degree partners contributed to the overall work and success of the project? Be specific to each team member.

As a group, I found that we were all encouraging and supportive of each other’s ideas. Everyone gave their input and constructive feedback in group discussions. I believe that since we all contributed to the project equally, we were able to be successful by achieving the desired end result. For instance, we always took the time to always communicate and collaborate. In this way, we knew that everyone was on track and knew exactly what they’re doing for the project. In addition, we always updated one another on our progress. As a team, we would give each other positive feedback and let one another know that “oh hey, that’s a great idea that we should add”. We equally gave all our input and discussed any issues out through communication.

4. When it comes to dealing with differences of opinion within your group:

When dealing with differences of opinions within my group, I would genuinely listen to their opinion until I fully understand it. In addition I would ask questions, and look for a compromise. I would discuss the facts of the difference of opinion calmly and openly. Furthermore, I would talk about how I feel about a certain opinion and endeavour to find a common ground, so that we could focus on the positive in our agreements.

5. In dealing with group members who were not fulfilling their responsibilities:

Everyone in the group did fulfill their responsibilities. Although there were days where we weren’t in class because of extra-curricular activities, we ensured to fulfill our responsibilities by sticking to the deadlines we discussed as a group. For example, when Jason missed class for hockey, he made sure to stay responsible by completing any work that needed to be done by a specific date. This was one of the reasons why our group was successful, for we never wasted a work period or fell behind, we were always on top of things.

6. What aspects were most successful? Least? What I would do differently?

The content of our documentary and the proper use of film techniques were the most successful, for we worked efficiently and effectively as a group to achieve the desired outcome. We brainstormed and came up with a co-operative story and character development. In addition, our film contains successful transitions between character introductions and title, and has appropriate music. We were organized and knew exactly what we wanted for each scene, which definitely helped us to achieve success. Originally, my group and I wanted to film a documentary on fitness and how greatly it impacts your life, unfortunately on the day we decided to film we encountered issues, for the head manager of each gym did not approve of us filming because it violates policy. If i were to do this project again, I would call each gym beforehand and ask for their consent over the phone. This would help us to not waste time on the day we meet up to film. I believe having better time management would have helped us work more efficiently, for it was tough to find a time where everyone was free to film, especially since we’re all busy with extra-curricular activities.

7. How successful is your project?  Give specific examples for your reasons.

Our project is very successful for we did careful planning, paid attention to detail and consistently had effective communication. Within the team, we kept open communication and resolved any conflicts through communication. In addition we all understood the project expectations, such as knowing exactly what the end goal of the project is, due date and etc.  Furthermore, we created a functional group structure, where we took the time to identify how the group will work well together and what each individual will be responsible for. Also, we were all compassionate and understanding. Knowing that we were all involved in extra-curricular activities; we understood each other’s situations and time. Although we were busy, we ensured to keep our deadlines so that we don’t fall behind schedule.

8. What I enjoyed most about this project:

I enjoyed filming the documentary, for I had a lot of fun laughing and bonding with my group members. Although it was very cold when we went downtown to film, it was honestly worth it for I am so happy that my group and I achieved the desired outcome. Moreover, I had fun being the interviewer for I met a lot of passionate people that were willing to share their viewpoints on why Toronto is one of the greatest cities to live in. I felt heartfelt and sincere because people expressed how proud they are of our city through their emotions. In addition, it was wonderful to see that tourists love Toronto so much, to the point where they want to move here. Interviewing tourists and Torontonians have helped me see others perspectives on our city, making me love Toronto so much more. Overall, I enjoyed everything about this project for it was an interesting and fun project to work on.

9. What skills I acquired:

The skills I have acquired from this project are being able to conceptualize and adapt to change. I can now conceive and internally develop concepts and ideas. In addition as a storyboard artist, I had to make suitable changes a few times to the thumbnails, so that it would fit new conditions.

10. What difficulties I encountered:

When drawing the thumbnail sketches, I did experience difficulties with some of my sketches for it did not satisfy me. The sketches did not appear to look like the image that I was picturing in my mind. As a result, I started to become stressed and was constantly erasing and redrawing the scene multiple times. Also, when I received constructive feedback from group members I had to change certain scenes, and complete them to tight deadlines.  Another difficulty we encountered as a group was time management and flexibility. It was really hard for us to find a time where we were all free to film, for we were all involved in extra-curricular activities. In addition, the day we scheduled to film, it was tough to change our story idea for we were short on time. Thus, we all cancelled any extra-curricular activities we had that day to finish filming our documentary.

11. How I overcame them:

I overcame my difficulties by keeping a positive attitude and immediately re-framing it. Whenever I have a difficulty, I view it as a challenge and endeavour to start moving forward. This helps me to maintain a positive attitude and manage stress.

Issue: The Changing Way we Communicate: The Emerging Power of New Media

What I was trying to get across to the class about my issue?

To the class, my partner and I were trying to get across the positive and negative impacts of media on society and how technology has ignited a world of new media that has revolutionized the way we communicate.  Our aim was to educate the class on how the emerging power of new media has brought us together on a global scale and at the same time how it has devalued some of the more important aspects of society. We wanted to emphasize that although new media has made information more easily accessible, we have also suffered the consequences. Our dependence on technology and the internet has diminished some of our previously valued qualities, such as first-hand, research and credible news, privacy on the internet, and valuable personal communication. Despite losing these things, at the same time, technology has revolutionized the way we live. To get our point across, we decided to discuss the following functions of media: information, advertisements and social media.

Production Elements Organization -research, -presentation, -creative process

The organization of our presentation was productive for we used effective transitions between individual segments of our presentation. When presenting, we ensured to have equal involvement and participation. Overall, I think that Kodi and I spend a reasonable amount of time preparing for our presentation. Not only did we reread our facts several times, but we also took the time to do a run-through of our presentation.  This helped us know if we were short on time or overtime. Thus, we indicated the points that should be taken out and whether if it would be necessary to add more examples/videos to our presentation. In addition, we delegated tasks accordingly and set deadlines. If we were unsure of certain facts or ideas, we would ensure to communicate with one another and give each other feedback.  To present our topic in an interesting manner, we used effective strategies to engage and involve the audience. In addition, we were energetic and knew the points we wanted to emphasize to the class.

Participation. Comments about co-operation, diligence, support. To what degree partners contributed to the overall work and success of the project?(if applicable)

As a group, I found that Kodi and I were both encouraging and supportive of each other’s ideas. Kodi gave her input and constructive feedback in our discussions. Since we both contributed to the project equally, we were able to be successful by achieving the desired end result. For instance, we always took the time to communicate and collaborate. In this way, we knew that we were both on track and aware of what needed to be completed by each person.  As partners, we demonstrated a sense of cohesion.

What aspects were most successful? Least? What I would do differently?

I think the theory and analysis of our project was the most successful because we ensured to be in-depth by providing visual, sound and media examples for the class. This definitely helped us get our point across for we illustrated our point of view about our issue. In addition, I believe our production was also successful for we were well prepared and outlined the format of our presentation in a clear, audible and effective way.  The least successful aspect was our overall creativity and interest level. If I were to do this project again, I would spend more time in the creativity aspect of the project, for I found that we could’ve been more creative in the way we presented our issue. When working on the project, we were focusing mainly on our theory and analysis, and not so much the creativity. Originally Kodi and I wanted to create a unique game for the class to play, but due to lack of time we ended up choosing an online social media game. Although we used effective strategies to engage and involve the audience, next time I would ensure to have better time management so that all aspects of the project would be prioritized and completed to the best of our ability.

Theory: How did we use a variety of medias to get our point across? Why did we choose what we did? What worked? What didn’t?

When researching the content of our issue, we kept in mind that the information we deliver to the class should be interesting and relevant. Most of the time, we discovered that not all information sources are useful nor reliable.  Thus, we ensured to use concrete examples which convey the reality of the points we’re trying to make, rather than leaving everything theoretical. Moreover we remembered to stress the points that we believed would interest the class. Overall, using a variety of medias helped us come over as more authoritative, for we had facts and specifics to back ourselves up.

How did we explore the use of technology/media concepts in relation to our issue?

We not only explored online sources, but we also considered our own point of views and what we believe. In addition we used YouTube videos, images, situations when media was present (Paris attack, ALS ice bucket challenge.) This helped us further clarify our points and gave the class a better understanding of the history and background of new media.

Analysis: How much of our presentation was based on research? On opinion? (whose?) INCLUDE A LIST OF RESOURCES, CITATIONS

We used facts and also looked at professional’s opinions. Since our topic was not so complex, I found that we were able to develop ideas with the information we’re already aware of. In addition, we did take the time to research facts, to further deepen our knowledge and understanding of our topic. Something that we found intriguing was a media and communication theory stated by Croteau and Hoynes. The theory stated the influence of media and how we’re involving with it. We kept this theory in mind, while researching for other facts.

Depth of content: To what degree did we introduce new ways of looking at this issue, new information? Was this class ‘educated’ or just ‘entertained’?

I find that the class was educated rather than entertained, for we emphasized points and theories that we’re not all aware of.  We wanted to inform the class about how technology has revolutionized the way we live. Relating back to our thesis, we discussed the positive and negative impacts of media on society and ensured to use examples that are relatable to our daily lives. Especially since we’re in a time that is heavily dominated by the internet, we are able to receive news or share our latest photo with a touch of a button. Sites such as Buzz feed are used for sources of news, advertisements surround us both offline and online, as well social media has built communities beyond our everyday face-to-face interactions use.  Although new media has made information more easily accessible, we have also suffered the consequences. Our dependence on technology and the internet has diminished some of our previously valued qualities, such as first-hand, research and credible news, privacy on the internet, and valuable personal communication. Despite losing these things, at the same time, technology has revolutionized the way we live.

How well did our examples reinforce and illustrate our points?

We used effective examples that were brief, extended, and hypothetical. We used brief examples that were not lengthy nor complex, to further illustrate a point that may not be immediately obvious to all audience members. In addition, we used extended examples to further explain concepts. Moreover, the fictional examples we used helped the class understand complex facts and ideas, for we put them into more relatable terms. Overall, I find that our examples helped the class better understand and relate to the key points of our presentation.

What new skills did I develop during this project?

I developed problem solving skills during this project. When we encountered problems, I developed and used strategies central to our goals. I was able to facilitate group decision making and deal productively with conflict.  Developing this important skill definitely aided us to be productive and accomplish our tasks in an effective manner.  In addition, I developed the skill of being innovative. I introduced new ideas and was creative in thinking. I looked at problems or situations from a fresh perspective and endeavoured to come up with creative solutions.

What new things did I learn about myself in the process of working on this project? (related to the content and/or process)

I learned that I myself am not aware of the positive and negative effects of social media. We all use our phones daily and feel like we’re not going to survive without the use of technology. While working on this project, I learned that as much as I love my twitter page, it’s not worth the negative effects on my health. Technology has transformed the way we live and it’s a serious issue that adolescents don’t know the negative effects social mediums are doing to our brains and overall health. Through working on this project, I’ve learned to limit the time I spend on technology and social mediums. Not only does it distract us from life goals, but it is affecting the way we communicate with our peers.

What might I do differently if I were starting over? What skills can I transfer to my next assignment in this class or others?(or life!)

If I were starting over, I would spend more time in the creativity aspect of the project; for I found that we could’ve been more creative in the way we presented our issue.  For next time, I will keep in mind to engage the audience more, for it is critical to have the audience involved. But overall, I am completely satisfied with the end result, for I do believe we were organized and productive.  The problem solving skills I have gained from this project will definitely be transferred to my next assignment, for it truly did help us be productive and work more effectively. Thus, I found that we achieved our desired end result. In addition, for next assignments I will transfer the skills I already have: hardworking, independent, organized, reliable, responsible, productive, and etc.

Overall, we equally gave all our input and discussed any issues out through communication.

4. When it comes to dealing with differences of opinion within your group:

When dealing with differences of opinions within my group, I would genuinely listen to their opinion until I fully understand it. In addition I would ask questions, and look for a compromise. Everyone in the group did fulfill their responsibilities. Although there were days where we weren’t in class because of extra-curricular activities, we ensured to fulfill our responsibilities by sticking to the deadlines we discussed as a group. For example, with Lea missing class for YMAC, she made sure to stay responsible by completing any work that needed to be done by a specific date. This was one of the reasons why our group was successful, for we never wasted a work period or fell behind, we were always on top of things.

6. What aspects were most successful? Least? What I would do differently?

The film was the most successful aspect, for we worked efficiently and effectively as a group to achieve the desired outcome. We were organized and knew exactly what we wanted for each scene, which definitely helped us to achieve success.

7. How successful is your project?  Give specific examples for your reasons.

Our project is quite successful for we did careful planning, paid attention to detail and consistently had effective communication. Within the team, we kept open communication and resolved any conflicts through communication. In addition, we all understood the project expectations, such as knowing exactly what the end goal of the project is, due date and etc.  Furthermore, we created a functional group structure, where we took the time to identify how the group will work well together and what each individual will be responsible for. 9. What skills I acquired:

The skills I have acquired from this project is having the ability to find solutions to problems using my creativity, and reasoning. For example,  I was able to come up with alternate ideas during group discussions. In addition, I was able to conceptualize and adapt to change. I can now conceive and internally develop concepts and ideas.

10.  What difficulties I encountered:

As a group, when we were sharing ideas it was difficult for us to decide on a final idea, for some of the ideas gave a negative outlook towards the people that were going to be featured in our film. Thus, we spent an entire period brainstorming new ideas, when originally our plan was to spend that period filming our first scene. In addition, there were times where the sound was picking up a lot of the background noise, so we had to record multiple times. Luckily, I figured out the reason and in the end was able to get good quality sound.

11. How I overcame them:

I overcame my difficulties by keeping a positive attitude and immediately re-framing it. Whenever I have a difficulty, I view it as a challenge and endeavour to start moving forward. This helps me to maintain a positive attitude and manage stress.

Social Media Debate

Question: Do Social Networks encourage people to have good “interpersonal” skills?

Thesis: Social Networks do not encourage people to have good interpersonal skills, for people are being too dependent on social media to help them develop their social skills.

Points:

  • Teenagers are growing up and developing their social skills online.
  • It is to the point now, where most youth prefer meeting people over a virtual world, instead of speaking face-to-face.
  • Thus, interpersonal skills that used to be a necessity are no longer learned or stressed at a young age.
  • When communicating through social networks, we tend to trust the people on the other end of the communication, so our messages tend to be more open.
  • Our social connections are not strengthened as much through social networks as they are face-to-face, so we don’t tend to deepen our relationships, instead they tend to exist in the status quo.
  • We tend to follow and interact with people who agree with our points of view, so we aren’t getting the same diversity of viewpoints as we’ve gotten in the past.

Closing argument: We don’t feel as personally connected to the people at the other end of our communication as we do when we’re face-to-face. So while we might be communicating more through social networks, we may not necessarily be building relationships as strongly.

Moreover, I was able to carry out instructions with accuracy and perform camera moves with precision and speed. For instance when I was filming the project, I was always collaborating with the production team, especially the director. In this way, I knew exactly where to position the camera, how to frame shots, and move the camera during the recording. I was very productive, for I was able to translate these instructions into carefully framed and composed shots. Overall, I believe I did well in my job, for I was organized, responsible and attentive to detail.

Furthermore, I was able to recognize interdependencies between myself and others in the group.  As the camera operator I ensured to gather all the equipment that was needed by a specific date. This ensured that we were organized, for we had all the necessary equipment’s that was needed to film. Also, I collaborated with Alex (the director) so that I would have an idea of what each shot of the film would look like. Overall I was able to see that my work products, decisions and efforts affect many others in the group, so staying on track and encouraging other members to stay productive was definitely one of the vital ways I contributed to the group.

As a team, we would give each other positive feedback and commented on each other’s work. For instance Alex (the director) would always be commenting on my work, letting me know that I’m doing a great job operating the camera.

For example, with Jason and Alex missing class for soccer, they made sure to stay responsible by completing any work that needed to be done by a specific date.

I think that the scene where Jason was featured was not so successful, for we wanted a little boy to be the actor in that scene. Unfortunately I was not able to get a little boy to be featured in that scene. I find that the story would’ve been conveyed to the audience a lot clearer with the little boy, instead of Jason. In addition the props for the film were not too successful, for our group wanted a more realistic image of Cesar’s transition from a young solider to a grandfather. If I were to do this project again, I would want to spend more time on getting better props for the film. I would want to go shopping with Cesar for his props, for he did have a difficult time finding a military costume that was not too pricey.

Also, we were all compassionate and understanding, knowing that we were all involved in extra-curricular activities; we understood each other’s situations and time. Although we were busy, we ensured to keep our deadlines so that we don’t fall behind schedule.

8. What I enjoyed most about this project:

I enjoyed filming the hidden gem, for I had a lot of fun laughing and bonding with my group members. I’ve also never done a project like this before, so working on it was a new experience for me. It was also my first time being a camera operator, so Jason who was a bit more experienced than me, did help me out in certain shots. Overall, I was able to learn quickly and apply the techniques and effects that I did not know how to do before to the recordings. In addition I loved hearing so many creative ideas from my group members. As a group when we shared our ideas, it was difficult for us to choose a story for everyone’s story was so creative and good. Overall, I enjoyed everything about this project for it was an interesting and enjoyable project to work on.

9. What skills I acquired:

The skills I have acquired from this project are being able to conceptualize and adapt to change. I can now conceive and internally develop concepts and ideas.  As the camera operator I had to make suitable changes a few times to the camera angles and shots, so that it would fit new conditions.

10.  What difficulties I encountered:

When operating the camera, I did experience difficulties with the camera itself. For instance while filming, the screen of the camera would go black and turn on and off. As a result, I started to become frustrated and annoyed, for we had to re-film the scene from the beginning. Also, I had to adapt the position of the camera multiple times, either because there were people walking in the background or parts of a landscape that we did not want in the scene. In addition, it was quite cold when we went downtown to film and we weren’t able to get a tripod, so I had to stabilize and elevate the camera myself.

11. How I overcame them:

I overcame my difficulties by keeping a positive attitude and immediately re-framing it. Whenever I have a difficulty, I view it as a challenge and endeavour to start moving forward. This helps me to maintain a positive attitude and manage stress. Thus, I stayed positive and did the best I could without a tripod.

1. How do you feel about the title you were given and how well you did your job in this project?  Give specific examples of your experience.

I had a lot of fun creating the thumbnail sketches for the storyboard, for I love drawing and being creative.  It was actually my first time creating a storyboard for a film, so it was definitely a great experience for me. I learned how to indicate the camera zooming in and out, for I did not know how to show that through images on paper.  I think I did really well in my job in this project, for I was organized by created a mind map before starting the storyboard. This definitely helped me to stay on track and work a lot more efficiently to tight deadlines. While creating the storyboard, I was able to take direction, and was prepared to make changes to my work in response to constructive feedback from group members. Overall, I worked efficiently and effectively as both the storyboard artist and camera operator.

For instance, when we were brainstorming societal want/needs, I always shared my ideas and was encouraging and supportive to my group members. Any group discussions that we had, I always gave my input. Furthermore, I was able to recognize interdependencies between myself and others in the group.  As the storyboard artist I ensured to complete all my thumbnails by a specific date, so that the camera operator (myself) would know exactly how to film the advertisement. Also, I collaborated with Liam (the sounds and credits director) so that he would know what background audio he should edit into the film.

We equally gave all our input and discussed any issues out through communication.

4. When it comes to dealing with differences of opinion within your group:

When dealing with differences of opinions within my group, I would genuinely listen to their opinion until I fully understand it. In addition I would ask questions, and look for a compromise. The advertising commercial was the most successful aspect, for we worked efficiently and effectively as a group to achieve the desired outcome. We were organized and knew exactly what we wanted for each scene, which definitely helped us to achieve success. I think that the radio ad was not so successful, for we didn’t really spend a lot of time on it. If we were to do this project again, I would spend an equal amount of time on all aspects out our project, for we focused a lot of our time towards the TV commercial. I find that if we spent and equal amount of time on the radio ad, it would’ve been just as good. In addition, time management was tough. With everyone being busy with extra-curricular activities, it was difficult to find a time where everyone was free to film the project.

7. How successful is your project?  Give specific examples for your reasons.

Our project is very successful for we did careful planning, paid attention to detail and consistently had effective communication.

Originally Liam was going to be featured in the TV commercial, but since he was too busy with his extra-curricular activities we had to come up with a new plan and find new actors for our commercial. Furthermore due to our busy schedules, we weren’t all always in class so when we had class to work on the project it was hard for us to communicate with one another. Thus, we communicated a lot through email and text.

11. How I overcame them:

I overcame my difficulties by keeping a positive attitude and immediately reframing it. Whenever I have a difficulty, I view it as a challenge and endeavour to start moving forward. This helps me to maintain a positive attitude and manage stress.

Reading Media: Dr.Leech Presentation

Reading Media

1) A speaker named Dr. Leech, presented to the class a wide range of commercials that can be analyzed and deconstructed in text and subtext. This process taught me numerous things concerning the media and how they have aimed specific commercials to particular individuals. Everywhere we go, we’re exposed to all media messages. Commercials are especially unavoidable to watch for we’re constantly exposed to them, when watching our TV programs. After listening to Dr.Leech’s presentation, I came to a realization that we seldom perceive the commercials true impact on us. These commercials that we watch can influence us to buy products that we don’t need, think a particular way, and aspire a lifestyle that we wouldn’t inevitably agree with. Thus, I have learned that analyzing commercials is of great importance. Through deconstructing a media message, not only will it uncover the point of view of media makers, but it will also reveal their values, and their biases. When deconstructing media, I learned that you must consider the “text” of  the media, which is what you see and/or hear. It can include a sequence of written or spoken words, moving images, pictures…etc. In addition, the “subtext” is an individual interpretation of the media message and ordinarily may be misleading, for it is not actually heard or seen; it is the meaning we create from the text in our own minds. I have now learned to consider these two key concepts when viewing a commercial. During class I found the break down of the text and subtext for the Lysol bathroom cleaner commercial quite captivating. Personally, after viewing the commercial I was tempted to go home and tell my mom about this amazing bathroom cleaner that kills 99.9% of bacteria. Immediately the subtext that I created in my mind was that, if I buy this product I will not become ill, for my bathroom will be free of germs. As Dr. Leech further analyzed the subtext, I realized that the company was trying to persuade the audience into thinking that their bathroom was indisputably the dirtiest place in their house, and that having germs in your bathroom is certainly bad for your health, for it will make you and your kids unwell. Thus the subtext should be paid close attention to, for it is more influential than the text itself. Most consumers would be influenced to buy this product, for they fear that if this product is not bought they will become severely ill from having an unsanitary bathroom. You must be aware that as the viewer, you’re creating your own subtext based on your previous knowledge, opinions, and values. Overall, my outlook has definitely changed in viewing commercials.

Analyzing a New Commercial

COMMERCIAL:

2) Text:

  • “Beneful Healthy Weight is so good.”
  • “How can this be low-calorie, how is that even possible?”
  • “With rice and real chicken, and accents of apples, carrots & green beans.”
  • ” I feel good. Lean, strong and you’re gonna find out how strong when we wrestle.”
  • “Look at you, you have no idea what’s coming.”
  • “Come on make your move.”
  • “Beneful Healthy Weight, a delicious low-calorie meal your dog will love.”
  • Catch Phrase: “Healthy with a side of happy.”

Subtext:

  • The dog only feels healthy because he eats Beneful.
  • He feels so strong that he believes he can wrestle his owner.
  • Feeding your dog Beneful will not only make them healthy, but it will also make them happy.
  • If you don’t feed your dog Beneful you’re a bad owner, for the food you’re feeding your dog right now is not making he/she happy.

Overall, the subtext of this commercial is suggesting that the owner in the commercial is a good owner because he is feeding his dog a healthy meal that not only makes the dog happy, but also makes him feel as strong as a wrestler. They are proposing that if you’re not feeding your dog this particular food brand you’re not a good owner, for your dog is feeling sad, unhealthy and weak. Thus, this is a bias implication because they are trying to make a profit through these outrageous claims. It is fallacious to think that feeding your dog other premium dog brands that are not Beneful is unwholesome. This commercial and the Lysol bathroom cleaner commercial are perfect examples of instilling fear in the consumer.

Personal Learning Styles

As humans of this world we are all distinctive from one another. We all acquire knowledge differently, making us unique. After conducting two learning style inventories, I’ve discovered that I am a visual and auditory learner. As a visual learner, I learn best by using methods that are mainly visual. Rather than understanding and remembering things through physical movement, I prefer to comprehend things by sight. For instance, during a lecture I would be able to learn more efficiently if there were graphics, a demonstration, or reading to look at. In addition during presentations, visual aids such as: charts, graphs, slides, and films would help me to acquire knowledge in a more effective way. Furthermore, I have discovered that I am also an auditory learner. I prefer to read test questions, stories, assignments, or directions out loud rather than in my head. In this way, I would be able to fully grasp the information that I am reading. As an auditory learner, I prefer class lectures to assigned readings, as there are past instances where I have experienced a full apprehension of a complex topic through listening, rather than reading it on my own. In addition, discussing new or known information that I’ve learned also assists my knowledge. Overall my learning goals in this course is to develop the ability to analyze and evaluate complex information from a wide range of print and media, deepen my learning and understanding of media by viewing issues from multiple perspectives, and build my collaboration skills by sharing knowledge with other classmates. To accomplish my learning goals, I will begin by focusing on effort. I will aim to use suitable strategies and make choices that are challenging and engaging.
